The Strangled, the Fallen, and the Gored

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18932 )
Q1: Is the gored animal and the fallen animal forbidden, or disliked? What is the gored animal? If one animal gores another, and I catch up to it and slaughter it before it dies, is it lawful or forbidden? And if a car strikes a beast that I have caught up to and slaughtered for that reason, is it lawful or forbidden? What is the fallen animal? If it is a lean animal that I slaughter before it dies, is it lawful or forbidden? And what about eating what a predator has eaten? If a predator has eaten its head or a limb, is it lawful or forbidden if I find it still alive, then I slaughter it in the name of Allah?
A1: Allah the Exalted said:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death]حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةُ وَالدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ الْخِنْـزِيرِ وَمَا أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ بِهِ وَالْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَالْمَوْقُوذَةُ وَالْمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَالنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَا أَكَلَ السَّبُعُ إِلا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
in Surat al-Ma'idah, verse. The strangled animal is: one that dies by strangulation with the hand, a rope, or by having its head inserted into something narrow until it dies. The beaten animal is: one that dies due to being struck with a stick, a piece of wood, an iron bar, or by something collapsing on it. The fallen animal is: one that falls from a height, such as a mountain or a rooftop. The gored animal is: one that is gored by another and dies as a result. The prey of a predator is: one that dies as a result of a predator devouring it, whether the predator is a wolf, a lion, or a bird of prey.
These types are not lawful to eat if they die due to any of the aforementioned causes. However, if a person catches up to it while it is alive with a clear, stable life and slaughters it, then it becomes lawful; due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.إِلا مَا ذَكَّيْتُمْ
