Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: {Forbidden to you is dead meat...}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother is asking another question about the exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted—after seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrowsحُرّمتْ عليْكُمُ الْميْتةُ والدّمُ ولحْمُ الْخنزير وما أُهلّ لغيْر اللّه به والْمُنْخنقةُ والْموْقُوذةُ والْمُتردّيةُ والنّطيحةُ وما أكل السّبُعُ إلّا ما ذكّيْتُمْ وما ذُبح على النُّصُب وأنْ تسْتقْسمُوا بالأزْلام
[Al-Ma'idah: 3]. I hope for an explanation of this verse.
Is the animal that is gored considered forbidden if it is slaughtered while still alive? And is the intended meaning of the gored animal the one that is gored by another sheep? I hope for an answer to this. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The verse is clear. Allah the Exalted says:
Prohibited to you are dead animalsحُرّمتْ عليْكُمُ الْميْتةُ
[Al-Ma'idah: 3]. Dead meat—this is well known—refers to that which dies of natural causes. This is forbidden, whether it is a cow, a camel, a sheep, a gazelle, a rabbit, a chicken, or anything else.
and bloodوالدّمُ
is the flowing blood that comes out of the beast when it is slaughtered, and it also flows from wounds. This is ritually impure and forbidden; because of His saying in the other verse:
or blood spilled outأَوْ دَمًا مَسْفُوحًا
[Al-An'am: 145]. As for the blood that is in the veins and inside the meat, no, it is not forbidden, and there is no blame in it.
and the flesh of swineولحْمُ الْخنزير
is well known. Pigs are well known to be all forbidden by the consensus of the Muslims. Even if the Christians eat them, their eating of it is forbidden for them and an abomination, but they are disbelievers who do not heed the limits of Allah.
and that which has been dedicated to other than Allahوما أُهلّ لغيْر اللّه به
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
One slaughters a sheep, a cow, or a camel, slaughtering it for the jinn to draw near to them out of fear of them, or slaughtering for idols or for the people of the graves, drawing near to them with sacrifices as some of the ignorant do, or slaughtering it for the stars; for the Pleiades, or for such and such, or for the sun, or otherwise. This is called: a dead slaughter. It is called: slaughtered for other than Allah, meaning: it was sacrificed for other than Allah, and a name other than Allah was invoked over it . This is dead meat like the sacrifices of the polytheists.
and that which is strangledوالْمُنْخنقةُ
is that which is strangled with a rope, or with the hands, where a person strangles it. For example: there is a rope around its neck, and it is strangled by it and dies, or another animal strangles it by dragging it until it dies. This is called: strangled.
and that which is beaten to deathوالْموْقُوذةُ
is that which is struck with something heavy, such as a sheep that they strike with wood, or with stones until it dies. This is called: beaten to death. Similarly, if it is struck with a piece of wood, or with a spear by the edge of the spear, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called it: beaten to death; because it died by the weight, by the edge and breadth of the spear, for example, or by a piece of wood, or by a stone that fell on it, or a door that fell on it until it died. It is called: beaten to death and struck to death. All of this is forbidden.
and that which fallsوالْمُتردّيةُ
: that which falls from a mountain, or from the roof of an upper floor, or falls into a pit or a well and dies.
and that which is goredوالنّطيحةُ
: is that which is gored by its sister. A female goat is gored by a female goat, a ram is gored by a ram, a cow is gored by a cow, a bull is gored by a bull, and so on. So the two that gore each other, if they die or one of them dies, it is dead meat, unless it is caught while alive and slaughtered; then it becomes lawful. Similarly, the one beaten to death, and similarly the one that falls, all of them, if its owner or a Muslim catches it alive before it dies and slaughters it; it becomes lawful.
And similarly
and that which is eaten by the predatorما أكله السبع

And similarly
those which are sacrificed on stone altarsوَمَا ذُبِحَ عَلَى النُّصُبِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
that which the disbelievers slaughter on their idols; for their idols, they slaughter it to exalt their idols. This is like that which is slaughtered for other than Allah, it is dead meat; for this reason He said after it:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.إلّا ما ذكّيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
So what is slaughtered by the Muslims while it is alive, then it is lawful. And similarly, what is slaughtered by the People of the Book: the Jews and the Christians, if they slaughter it in the manner prescribed by the Shari'ah; then it becomes lawful, if they catch it alive before it dies, by catching it moving its leg or its hand or its tail or what... meaning: the intended meaning is that they catch it alive, yes.

The presenter: Yes, may Allah reward you with good.
