Is it permissible for a son to include his deceased mother in his sacrifice with his family, or should he offer a separate sacrifice on her behalf if he wishes to do so from his own wealth?

The questioner : The second question says: My mother has passed away, and I want to offer a sacrifice on her behalf from my own wealth. Should I include her in my sacrifice with my family, or should I offer a separate sacrifice for her?

The Shaykh : It is not prescribed to offer a specific sacrifice exclusively for a deceased person. Although this is permissible, it is not prescribed, as far as I know, because there is no report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions that he offered a separate sacrifice for any of the deceased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lost his wife Khadijah, his wife Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, and all his daughters except Fatimah, and his sons died, and his uncle Hamzah died, yet he did not offer a specific sacrifice for any of them. Rather, when he offered a sacrifice, he would say:
O Allah, this is for Muhammad and the family of Muhammad اللهم هذا عن محمد وءال محمد
thereby including his living and deceased family members. If that is the case, then the best course for the questioner is not to offer a specific sacrifice for his mother, but rather to offer a sacrifice for himself and his family, which includes the living and the deceased. This is the Sunnah. Some people offer a sacrifice for the deceased in the first year of their death, calling it the "grave sacrifice" or the "burial sacrifice," and this is a religious innovation. This is because offering a specific sacrifice for the deceased under this name in the first year of their death is not reported from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions, so it is among the innovations that people have introduced, and every innovation is misguidance, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.

The questioner : May Allah send blessings upon Muhammad. May Allah reward you with good.
Dear brothers, in today's episode, we reviewed the letters of our brothers: Asim Nadeem from Riyadh, our brother Saleh Jaber, a Sudanese resident in Kuwait, our brother A Q Y L from Riyadh, our brother Ibrahim Matir from Jizan, our brother Sa'id Muhammad, our brother Muhammad al-Abdullah Saleh from Qatar, and our brother M J H from al-Qassim, al-Dhabyah.
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saleh al-Uthaymeen, a professor at the College of Sharia at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in al-Qassim, and the imam and khatib of the Grand Mosque in Unayzah, answered the questions of these brothers. We thank him for his answers, and we thank you for your good follow-up. May we meet you in a future episode, if Allah wills. We entrust you to Allah the Exalted. And to conclude, we say to all the pilgrims: May Allah accept their Hajj and return them to their families safe and successful. Indeed, He is Able to do all things. And peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
