Coercion in Oaths

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q2: Does the person who is coerced into taking an oath owe an expiation?
A2: One of the conditions for the obligation of expiation for an oath is that the person swears voluntarily. As for the one who is coerced into swearing, he owes no expiation; for Allah the Exalted said:
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faithمَنْ كَفَرَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ إِيمَانِهِ إِلا مَنْ أُكْرِهَ وَقَلْبُهُ مُطْمَئِنٌّ بِالإِيمَانِ
[An-Nahl 16:106]
, and it was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Allah has forgiven my nation for mistakes and forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do.عفي لأمتي الخطأ والنسيان وما استكرهوا عليه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2045Sahih (Darussalam)
.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
