He Swears and Deliberately Breaks His Oath
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 14798 )
Q 1, 2: I used to swear, make vows, and deliberately break them many times. I do not know the number of oaths I took or the number of vows I made and did not fulfill. I am now regretful of that. Is repentance sufficient in this case, or is there an expiation? I swore on the mushaf, made covenants, made promises, and made vows several times, and unfortunately, I deliberately broke all of them, and I am now regretful of that. Is there an expiation for this?
A 1, 2: Swearing by Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is a means of magnifying Him. Fulfilling oaths, keeping promises, and honoring covenants is evidence of strong certainty and steadfast faith, and this is among the characteristics of the righteous. Breaking oaths, violating covenants, and failing to keep promises are among the characteristics of open sinners and hypocrites. It is obligatory for you to repent from the broken oaths, from failing to keep promises, and from violating covenants, and to return to people any wealth that was involved in them. As for the vows you made, it is obligatory for you to fulfill them, so strive to know them to the best of your ability. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
