Correspondence Between Young People

Fatwa No. ( 8593 )
Q: I am a twenty-five-year-old girl who has worn the hijab for five years. I believe in Allah and His Messenger, the Day of Resurrection, and the punishment of the Hereafter. I remember death every minute and every second. You cannot imagine how much fear I feel when I remember death, because sometimes I do things that do not please Allah. I want to be a believer who is pure, sincere with her Lord, and strong in faith. How can that be? I want to ask: Is it permissible for a girl to correspond with
a young man through what is known as the "acquaintance corner"? And is it permissible to listen to religious praises accompanied by modern instruments? Also: Why does the pilgrim wear those clothes during Hajj?
A : First: It is not permissible for you to correspond with a young man who is not a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to you, through what is known as the "acquaintance corner," because that is something that incites fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and leads to evil and corruption. Second: It is permissible for you to listen to religious praises, provided they do not contain exaggeration regarding a person, lying, or shirk (associating partners with Allah). Third: Allah commanded us through His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to wear the izar (lower garment) and the rida' (upper garment) in Hajj and 'Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) for a wisdom that He knows. Therefore, it is obligatory for us to comply in hope of reward, whether we know the wisdom or not. Among the things the scholars mentioned regarding this is: reminding people of the state of people on the Day of Gathering and Resurrection, the Day of Resurrection, and making the pilgrim feel humility and equality between the rich and the poor. We ask Allah for success and guidance for us and for you, and steadfastness upon the truth until we meet Him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
