The Ruling on Correspondence Between Men and Women in Matters of Religion

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Her last and second question is: Is it permissible for a man and a woman to exchange letters in matters of religion, as reported regarding Aisha bint Talha, or as reported regarding Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Mother of the Believers, when Mu'awiyah sent to her?
And is it permissible for a man and a woman to exchange letters to facilitate the matter of marriage, meaning sending information about her or anything else that facilitates the matter of marriage, if that is not feasible by any other means? With the condition of fearing Allah in these messages and not being submissive in speech? May Allah reward you and may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: There is no harm in exchanging letters between men and women in matters of knowledge, matters of religion, and matters of this world as well. There is no harm in exchanging letters where a woman writes to a man to advise him, or asks him about knowledge, or about trade if she is engaged in trade, or about other matters that are not connected to corruption but are connected to the benefit of religion and this world. There is no harm. And there is no harm if a man writes to a woman if she is a jurist, asking her about matters of religion, or about matters of lineage, or about matters related to affairs of this world, such as trade, lands, or otherwise. The point is letters that contain no prohibition and nothing that indicates suspicion; there is no blame in that, not with the elderly or the young, not from men or women. Mu'awiyah wrote to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) saying to her: "Write to me with advice or a will, and be brief." So she wrote to him (may Allah be pleased with her) the famous hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah through the anger of the people, Allah is pleased with him and He makes the people pleased with him. And whoever seeks the pleasure of the people through the anger of Allah, Allah is angry with him and He makes the people angry with him.من التمس رضا الله بسخط الناس رضي الله عنه وأرضى عنه الناس، ومن التمس رضا الناس بسخط الله سخط الله عليه وأسخط عليه الناس
It is a good hadith narrated by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih and others.
And in another wording, she wrote to him another report with different wording: "Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah through the anger of the people, Allah suffices him from the burden of the people. And whoever seeks the pleasure of the people through the anger of Allah, they will not avail him against Allah in anything, and his praiser will return to be his censurer."
So the result is that correspondence in this regard is permissible between men and women, and likewise between the suitor and the prospective bride, where she writes to him about her condition with truthfulness so that he is on clear information, and he writes to her about his condition with truthfulness so that she is on clear information; there is no harm. But one must be cautious of lying, which may deceive this one or that one. The obligation is truthfulness in everything. And if meeting is facilitated for the suitor with the prospective bride, there is no harm, but with the condition of no seclusion. If he requests to meet her, or she requests that he meet her, there is no harm, but on the condition that there is no seclusion; because seclusion is forbidden and one of the causes of evil. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade seclusion and said:
No person should be alone with a woman except when there is a Mahram with herلا يخلون رجل بامرأة إلا ومعها ذو محرم
Sahih Muslim 1341a
And he said:
A man should not be alone with a woman, for the Shaytan is the third among them.لا يخلون رجل بامرأة؛ فإن الشيطان ثالثهما
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:94
So it is not permissible for the suitor to be alone with her. But if her mother, or her older sister, or her grandmother, or her stepmother is present, or another person is present without suspicion, in respectable gatherings, there is no harm. Yes.
