Fatwa number ( 21404 )
Q: In these days, especially in the summer season when weddings and occasions are numerous, some shops that rent out wedding supplies have started renting out certain instruments, such as musical instruments, drums, and singing tapes specifically for dancing, among other things. The owners of these shops consider this a means to attract people to rent the rest of the supplies, such as carpets, tents, and so on. We ask you, may Allah reward you, to clarify the ruling on renting out these instruments and the ruling on their price, and whether it affects the rest of the money? May Allah protect you.
A: It is not permissible to acquire instruments of amusement such as music and drums, nor to acquire tapes recorded with singing songs. It is not permissible to sell these items because of the assistance in sin and transgression involved in doing so. It is not permissible to consume their price, because when Allah forbids something, He forbids its price, as stated in the hadith. It is obligatory to destroy these items and get rid of them. It is not permissible to use these items in wedding parties or any other occasion because of the display of what is wrong involved in doing so. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
