I vowed that if I achieved a good percentage, I would host an iftar gathering in Ramadan

Fatwa No. ( 20731 )
Q: I was a student in the general secondary school, and I vowed that if I achieved a good percentage, I would host an iftar gathering in Ramadan, and Allah granted me success and I achieved a good percentage, but I was unable to host that gathering or even tell my family about it. I do not know if I made an exception in that vow or not, so I fasted three days in its place. Does this suffice?
A: What appears from your situation is that your vow is a permissible vow; because you vowed to do an absolute act, and you did not restrict it to the poor or the needy or the like of that which is intended for the sake of Allah. If the reality is so, then what occurred from you is a permissible vow, and a permissible vow leaves the person with a choice between fulfilling it and paying the expiation for an oath if he does not fulfill it, and there is no blame on him in that. The expiation is feeding ten poor people, each poor person receiving one and a half kilograms of wheat or rice or whatever the people of the country eat as their staple food, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. Whoever does not find the means to do so, he fasts three days. Based on that, your fasting of three days, if you are unable to feed or clothe or free a slave, suffices for you as the expiation for your vow. Do not pay attention to the doubt regarding your exception in the vow, for certainty is not removed by doubt. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
The people of the town, or clothing for them, or freeing a believing slave. Whoever cannot find the means to do so, he fasts for three days. Accordingly, if you are unable to feed, clothe, or free a slave, then fasting for three days suffices as the expiation for your vow. Do not pay attention to the doubt regarding your exclusion in the vow, for certainty is not removed by doubt. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
