Fatwa number ( 14227 )
Q: In the case of committing a sin, one intends to perform the expiation for an oath; because he vowed to Allah not to return to it. And does he perform the expiation every time he returns to the sin, or is the first expiation sufficient when he breaks the vow? Knowing that he intended—as I said—to perform the expiation every time he returns, as a discipline for himself and a deterrent for him. Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you with all good for us.
A: If a person conditions upon himself and vows to Allah the Exalted that whenever he returns to a sin, he will perform the expiation, then it is obligatory for him to do so; because this falls under the category of a vow, and the word "whenever" indicates repetition. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
