Guidance for one who vowed to Allah not to return to sin but then did
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener (S. S. G.) sent a long question, the summary of which is: that he committed a specific sin, and vowed to Allah to repent from it, but then he returned to it, and so he vows and returns a number of times. Now he inquires of the Shaykh’s eminence and says: What is to be done? And how does one quit the sin?
Answer:
You must strive against your self, and watch over Allah , and know that He is watching you, and that playing with His prohibitions is among the greatest causes of His anger toward you. It may be among your punishments that He seals your heart, so that you do not return to the truth—seeking refuge in Allah—because of your negligence and repetition of the sin. We ask Allah for well-being.
So it is obligatory for you to hasten to sincere repentance, regret for the past, and sincere resolve not to return to it. You must also pay the expiation for the oath regarding your covenant with your Lord and your oaths that you would not return. You must pay the expiation for the oath for that, along with sincere repentance and turning back. The expiation for the oath is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, giving each one half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food, such as dates, rice, or otherwise. If you are unable to do so due to your poverty and cannot afford it, you fast for three days.
And it is obligatory in all cases to strive earnestly for repentance and adhere to it, and to fear Allah and watch over Him until you stop this sin. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for you. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen.
