Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 804 )
Q: His father passed away, and his mother is still alive. She is an elderly woman, sixty-five years old, and blind. He asks whether she must observe the waiting period for widowhood given the circumstances described regarding her condition?
A: If her husband has died, she must observe the waiting period for widowhood, which is four months and ten days, whether she is young or old; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And those who are taken in death among you and leave wives behind - they, [the wives, shall] wait four months and ten [days]وَالَّذِينَ يُتَوَفَّوْنَ مِنْكُمْ وَيَذَرُونَ أَزْوَاجًا يَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِأَنْفُسِهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا
[Al-Baqarah 2:234]
Therefore, the questioner’s mother must observe the waiting period for widowhood for her husband who died, along with the mourning practices it entails, even if she is elderly or blind. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
