The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18955 )
Q1: I heard one of the preachers supplicating and saying: “O al-Hannan, O al-Mannan,” and he made his supplication. Is this among the Names of Allah by which He is invoked, or not?
A1: The Names of Allah the Exalted are based on what is transmitted, so Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is not named except by what came in the Qur'an or what is established by the Sunnah. Accordingly, (al-Hannan) is not among the Names of Allah the Exalted; rather, it is an attribute of action, meaning: the Merciful, from al-hanān with a light nun—meaning mercy. Allah the Exalted said:[Maryam 19:13] meaning: mercy from Us, according to one of the two interpretations of the verse. As for what came in some hadiths of naming Allah the Exalted as (al-Hannan), it is not established. As for (al-Mannan), it is among the established Beautiful Names of Allah, as in (Sunan Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i ) from the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a supplicant supplicating: Mishkat al-Masabih 2290 And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

وَحَنَانًا مِنْ لَدُنَّا“O God, I ask Thee by virtue of the fact that praise is due to Thee than whom there is no god, who showest favour and beneficence, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Lord of Majesty and Splendour, O Living One; O Eternal One, I ask of Thee.” The Prophet then said, “He has supplicated God using His greatest name, when supplicated by which He answers and when asked by which He gives.”
