The Collective Takbir

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20189 )
Q: The scholars among us still claim that the collective takbir is a sunnah, saying that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite the takbir in his tent in Mina, and the people would recite the takbir in response to his takbir. Is this true or false, is it a sunnah or an innovation?
A: The collective takbir is a religious innovation (bid'ah); because there is no evidence for it. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and what 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did does not contain evidence for the collective takbir. Rather, it indicates that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would recite the takbir alone, and when the people heard him, they would recite the takbir, each one reciting it alone. It does not indicate that they recite the takbir collectively. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
