Q 6: If a Muslim has entered into prayer and someone greets him, how does he return the greeting while he is in prayer?
Vol. 6: He returns it with a gesture or after the taslim; for it is narrated by Muslim in (his Sahih) from 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:Mishkat al-Masabih 979 And Abu Dawud narrated from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar from Suhayb who said: Sunan Abi Dawud 925Sahih (Al-Albani) , it was reported by al-Nasa'i and al-Tirmidhi , and al-Tirmidhi said: It is a good hadith. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Mas'ud said: We used to greet the Prophet while he was engaged in prayer and he would respond to our greeting, but when we returned from the Negus* we greeted him and he did not respond to us, so we said, “Messenger of God, we used to greet you when you were engaged in prayer and you would respond to us.” He replied, “Prayer demands one’s whole attention.” * The reference is to the return of those who had gone from Mecca to Abyssinia when Muslims were being persecuted. (Bukhari and Muslim.)
كنا نسلم على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو في الصلاة فيرد علينا، فلما رجعنا من عند النجاشي سلمنا عليه فلم يرد علينا، فقلنا: يا رسول الله: كنا نسلم عليك في الصلاة فترد علينا، فقال: إن في الصلاة لشغلاًI passed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who was praying.
