Fatwa No. ( 21052 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Director of the Center for Da'wah and Guidance in Makkah al-Mukarramah , in his letter No. (577 \ 20 \ 13) dated 8 \ 6 \ 1420 AH, which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with No. (3172) dated 11 \ 6 \ 1420 AH. His Excellency asked a question, the text of which is as follows: Since many colleges, institutes, and schools compel their graduates to wear a specific uniform upon graduation , and since many of the brothers have mentioned that this uniform is the attire of priests and monks when they are baptized in churches, I hope you will provide information on the accuracy of this in a fatwa regarding the ruling on wearing it, as shown in the attached picture.
After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that it is forbidden for Muslims to imitate the disbelievers in their specific clothing, whether the disbelievers are the Jews
or the Christians or others, due to the generality of the evidence from the Book and the Sunnah that prohibits imitating them. Among this is what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who copies any people is one of them.من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
It was narrated by the Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud and others. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when God's messenger saw him wearing two garments dyed with saffron he said, “These are the garments worn by infidels ; do not wear them.”لما رأى على عبد الله بن عمرو ثوبين معصفرين: إن هذه من ثياب الكفار فلا تلبسها
Mishkat al-Masabih 4327
It was narrated by Muslim in (his Sahih). And it is established in (Sahih Muslim ): that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to his governor in Azerbaijan 'Utbah ibn Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he said: "And beware of adorning yourselves with the attire of the people of shirk and wearing silk." Based on this, it is not permissible to wear what is called the "robe" upon graduating from a school, institute, or college, because it is from the clothing of the Christians . And the Muslim should take pride in his religion and his following of his Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and not pay attention to imitating those whom Allah has made angry with and led astray, such as the Jews and the Christians and others.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
