The questioner : Your Eminence, we love you for the sake of Allah, and our brothers in the Eastern Region convey their greetings to you.

The Shaykh : And upon you and them be peace.

The questioner : The question says: There are some good young men in our city who wear the turban, especially on occasions such as Fridays and festivals. We spoke with them and told them that wearing it is not a Sunnah, but rather it is due to the custom of the country in which they reside, and that it may be a garment of distinction and prominence in the current time. Their answer was: This is the dress of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did it, so we have a model in him, and people have only rejected this garment because they have strayed from the religion. What is your opinion and guidance in this matter? May Allah preserve you and protect you.

The Shaykh : Yes, our view is that this statement requires deepening in jurisprudence, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore the turban, and he wore the izar, and he wore the rida, because the people were wearing them.
And the meaning of "in the type of clothing" is that what people have accustomed themselves to, and which is not specifically forbidden, is a Sunnah. Do you understand?
As for what is specifically forbidden, such as if people customarily wear a garment that falls below the ankles, or if people customarily wear silk for men, this is known to be not permissible to follow.
But what is permissible and is the custom of the people, then the Sunnah is to dress as they dress, because if you deviated from that, it would become a distinction. And no person can bring evidence that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the turban. If he had commanded it, we would have known that it is a Sunnah, a worship, because everything that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded is worship, except in matters where the evidence indicates that they are for permissibility. But there is no hadith commanding the turban; rather, it is from the action of the Messenger because the people were accustomed to this.
And tell these brothers: Then wear an izar and a rida, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear an izar and a rida, and he used to wear the qamis sometimes.
So we say to the brothers: Your action is a distinction.
