Q: I am a teacher in an adult literacy school. At the end of the school year, when the results are announced and the certificates are distributed, many of them give me gifts. I accept them after they persistently press me, and sometimes threaten to be upset. What is the ruling on this? Is it permissible for me to accept them? And are they considered a bribe?
A: Giving a gift to a male or female teacher in regular schools, whether government or non-government,
is in the meaning of a bribe, so it is not permissible to give it or to accept it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade gifts to officials. It is authentically narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the hadith of Abu Hamid al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: It was narrated by Ahmad and others. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
