What is the ruling on gifts from students to teachers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Gifts from students to teachers?

The Shaykh : Regarding gifts from students to teachers, we see that if they are given after the students have finished their exams and the student has left that school, for example, there is no harm. However, if they are given during the studies, or during the exams, or if it is expected that the teacher will return to teach in the future, it is not permissible. Invitations to food do not fall under this prohibition. This is why, when the scholars mentioned that it is forbidden for judges to take bribes, they said: “And in the matter of invitations, he is like any other person.”
This hadith is evidence for the sermon for sudden events. If something occurs that requires a sermon, the one who has authority in this country should stand and deliver a sermon to the people, because this has a greater impact on people’s hearts than delaying it until another time.
