Q: We are the imams and mu'adhdhins of the mosques in Qahṭān, Ṭā'ih . We are far from the mosques we serve because of the difficulty of the terrain and the distance of our residences from the mosques. If we leave off performing these duties, there is no one else to perform them but us. We ask about the compensation we receive while we do not consistently perform it for every obligatory prayer: is there a sin upon us for it or not? We hope from Allah, then from you, that you will issue a ruling for us.
A: It is not permissible for a person to take on the adhan, the imamah, or any other of the mosque affairs, or any other job, if he does not perform the work. It is not lawful for him to accept the salary paid in exchange for it, and he must leave the job to one who will perform it as required. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
