Fatwa number ( 18330 )
Q: We hear some people saying: “O my God, You are my helper” . What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding uttering such phrases, and are they prohibited by the Shari'ah? This is because, and Allah knows best, their apparent meaning suggests that they should not be uttered. Until you answer, are they prohibited by the Shari'ah, or is there nothing wrong with them? Please inform us, may Allah preserve you, with a sufficient and adequate answer.
A : It is not permissible to make du'a' with this phrase; because it is a phrase that did not come in the Book or the Sunnah, and because “jah” (helper) is not among the attributes of Allah, and because it is a phrase that could mean that “jah” signifies directing oneself and fulfilling the need, which is a verbal error, even if the meaning is correct. Or it could mean directing me to intercession, which is an error in both wording and meaning. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
