Housing a sick paternal cousin in the same residence
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18658 )
Q: My father has a paternal cousin who is approximately seventy years old, and I wish for him to live with me and my children , as he has no male relatives other than me and my younger brother. He is an elderly man whose desire for marriage or sexual relations is not expected to return, especially since he has been suffering from occasional memory loss for about a year. I had him undergo medical examinations at a hospital in Jeddah , and they determined that his condition is "brain atrophy," which causes his forgetfulness. He sometimes even loses his way home from the mosque, and according to the doctor's report, a cure is not expected, unless Allah wills. In light of the above, I am requesting a ruling on housing this man—who has no one besides me among the men after Allah—in my house with my children, women, and daughters, as he requires someone to care for him at all times, especially since he sometimes asks about a person who is sitting right in front of him.
A : If the matter is as described, there is no harm in you housing your aforementioned paternal cousin with you in the house due to his need for it, and you are doing a good deed and will be rewarded, if Allah wills. However, it is obligatory for your women to observe hijab from him and for none of them to be alone with him, because he is a non-mahram to them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
