The Horoscopes

Fatwa No. ( 16694 )
Q: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding believing in the truth of the horoscopes found in newspapers and magazines and reading them?
A : Attributing misfortune and good fortune to the celestial bodies and zodiac signs is a form of shirk (associating partners with Allah) practiced by the earliest of the Majus (Zoroastrians), the Sabians among the philosophers, and similar groups of disbelief and shirk. Claiming knowledge of this is, on the surface, a claim to knowledge of the unseen, which is a challenge to Allah in His dominion, and this is a great shirk. Furthermore, in its reality, it is deception, lying, and playing with people's minds, consuming their wealth unjustly, and introducing corruption into their beliefs and deceiving them. Therefore, it is forbidden to publish horoscopes, look at them, or promote them among people. It is not permissible to believe them; rather, it is one of the branches of disbelief and a defect in tawhid (the oneness of Allah). It is obligatory to be cautious of this, to advise one another to abandon it, to rely upon Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and to place trust in Him in all matters.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
