Fatwa number ( 14206 )
Q: I am a young man who uttered a word without knowing its consequences. I smoked, although I had not been smoking before. So, out of my strong desire to quit smoking, I said: “It is forbidden upon me as my mother is forbidden to me.” But, may Allah protect us, I returned to it once again. Then I repented, praise be to Allah. Every time I remember this word, my face turns red. What should I do? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with the best of good.
A: It is obligatory for you, regarding your declaring smoking forbidden upon you as your mother is forbidden to you, and then your returning to smoking a second time, to pay the expiation for an oath. This is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you do not find the means to do so, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
