The Ruling on Canned Meats Imported from Foreign Countries

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 4159 )
Q 1: What is the ruling on canned meats imported from foreign countries ? And how is there reconciliation between the hadith:
Both lawful (Halal) and unlawful things (Haram) are evident but in between them there are doubtful things·and most people have no knowledge about them. So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honor (i.e. keeps them blameless). And he who indulges in these doubtful things is like a shepherd who pastures (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it.الحلال بين والحرام بين وبينهما أمور مشتبهات لا يعلمها كثير من الناس فمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه، ومن وقع في الشبهات وقع في الحرام
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
and the hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi , which he graded as good in his book (Jami' al-Tirmidhi) , from Sammak ibn Harb who said: I heard Qabisa
ibn Hilib
narrating from his father, who said:
he asked the Prophet about the food of the Christians, (a version saying it was a man who asked him), adding that it was a kind of food from which he kept aloof. He replied, “Let no doubt enter your breast by which you resemble Christianity.”سألت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن طعام النصارى فقال: لا يتخلجن في صدرك طعام ضارعت فيه النصرانية

A 1: There is no contradiction between the two hadiths. The food of the People of the Book is either such that we know they mentioned the name of Allah over their slaughtered animals, in which case it is lawful and falls under the first part of the hadith, which is His saying: "The lawful is clear," or we know that they mentioned the name of other than Allah, in which case it is forbidden and falls under the second part of the hadith, which is: "The forbidden is clear." Or we are ignorant of both matters, in which case we take the original ruling, which is the permissibility of their slaughtered animals. As for foods that do not depend on slaughter or butchering, such as bread, there is no doubt in the permissibility of eating them.
