The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 1591 )
Q 6: What is the ruling on using connections, and is it forbidden? For example, if I want to get a job or get into a school or the like, and I use a connection, what is its ruling?
A 6: First: If using a connection to intercede for you in a job results in depriving someone who is more deserving and has a stronger right to be appointed, in terms of the academic competence required for the position, the ability to bear its burdens and handle its tasks with precision, then intercession is forbidden; because it is injustice to the one who is more deserving of it, and injustice to those in authority by depriving them of the service of competent people who serve them and assist them in managing one of the facilities of life, and it is an encroachment on the Muslim community by depriving it of those who accomplish its tasks and manage its affairs in this area in the best way. Furthermore, it gives rise to grudges and bad suspicions, and is harmful to society. However, if using a connection does not result in the loss or diminishment of anyone’s right, then it is permissible, and in fact, it is encouraged by the Shari'ah, and the intercessor will be rewarded for it, if Allah wills. It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1432 .
Second: Schools, institutes, and universities are public facilities for the Muslim community, where they learn what benefits them in their religion and worldly affairs. No one in the community has a preference over another in them except for other justifications besides intercession. If the intercessor knows that his intercession will result in depriving someone who is more deserving in terms of eligibility, age, or priority in application, or the like, then the connection is prohibited; because of the injustice it causes to the one who is deprived or forced to go to a farther school, thereby suffering hardship while others rest, and because of the grudges and social corruption that arise from it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
