Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Questions nine and ten from Fatwa number ( 11780 )
Q 9: From where is the ruling of the prohibition of eating a sea creature that feeds on decomposing corpses derived?
A 9: The original ruling for sea creatures is that they are lawful to eat; due to the generality of the statement of Allah the Exalted:
Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travelers, but forbidden to you is game from the land as long as you are in the state of ihramأُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِلسَّيَّارَةِ وَحُرِّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَرِّ مَا دُمْتُمْ حُرُمًا
[Al-Ma'idah 5:96]
until evidence is established that transfers this ruling, and this is supported by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the sea:
Its water is pure and what dies in it is lawful food.هو الطهور ماؤه الحل ميتته
Sunan Abi Dawud 83Sahih (Al-Albani)
