Study of Gynecology for Men

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 4671 )
Q1: I am a student in the College of Medicine, and next year, if Allah wills, the course of Gynecology and Obstetrics will be required of us. In light of this, I ask the following: A - Is it permissible for me to attend the practical study sessions where the woman’s body might be exposed? B - Is it permissible for a male doctor to specialize in Gynecology and Obstetrics, or is this restricted to female doctors? C - Is it permissible for a woman suffering from any illness other than gynecological or obstetric diseases to visit an eye doctor or an ear, nose, and throat doctor, given that there are female specialists in these fields? D - Is it permissible for a female doctor to examine a male
patient?

A1: A - B: If there are sufficient female specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics, then you should restrict yourself to them, and it is not permissible for you to study in this field or to look at a woman’s awrah (part of the body that must be covered) through training, such as examining her or performing surgery on her. However, if the number of female specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics is insufficient to fulfill the necessary duties in this area, and the need of the Muslims calls for your specialization in it, then it is permissible for you to study in it, and you are granted a dispensation to see what dire necessity requires to be exposed of the woman’s body, for the purpose of examination or surgery. C - If it is feasible for the woman to have her illness diagnosed and treated by a female doctor who is an expert in the type of her illness, then it is not permissible for her to be examined or treated by a male doctor; otherwise, it is permissible for her to do so. D - It is permissible for her to examine and treat male patients if there is a need for it and no male is available to do so; otherwise, it is prohibited, and it becomes obligatory for a male doctor to take charge of his treatment. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
