A doctor examining a woman to prove her virginity
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 7584 )
Q 1: Whatis the ruling on a doctor examining a girl to determine whether she is a virgin or not? This is for the purpose of issuing her a certificate, and the same ruling applies in the case of a female doctor.
A 1: First: It is permissible if there is a pressing need that calls for it, such as if there is an accusation from which she wishes to be cleared, or if the accused is being cleared of an assault on her; otherwise, it is not permissible. Second: When there is a need, the examiner must be a Muslim female doctor if that is feasible; if not, then a non-Muslim female doctor; and if that is not feasible, then a Muslim male doctor in the presence of a mahram (a relative one may not marry) for her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
