The seclusion of a female patient with a male doctor
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 8147 )
Q: Since a Muslim woman may fall ill and require a doctor’s examination, and there may be no female doctor in the hospital to perform it, the examination is referred to male doctors. Does the Shari'ah permit this doctor to be alone with this patient and prevent her mahram from accompanying her on the grounds that he has a nurse with him who is not wearing hijab, even though she is a stranger to the doctor, and the presence of the mahram
This requires her to be veiled from him. Does the Shari'ah permit preventing the mahram from attending the examination for this reason and allowing the doctor to be alone with the female patient, or is the mahram's presence required? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A: It is not permissible for the doctor to be alone with the sick woman for her examination; rather, her husband or her mahram must be present during her examination. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
