Q: My father (may Allah have mercy on him) was suffering from several illnesses that followed one another before his passing. After that, he was involved in a traffic accident on the road to Riyadh al-Qasim , which resulted in the death of three people. According to the traffic department’s report, he was the one responsible for the accident. He lived for five years after the accident, suffering from illnesses that prevented him from fasting the expiation , and he was unable to fast because of those illnesses, especially diabetes. Finally, he was struck by paralysis that caused his death. What is obligatory
for us, in detail, as his children, both male and female, who number ten, so that we can make up that fast according to the principles of Islamic law? May Allah preserve you and protect you from all evil and what is disliked. .
A: If you fast on behalf of your father the expiation fast that became obligatory upon him and he died before fasting it, that is good and a form of dutifulness to your father; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1147 , and this is from the category of what is recommended. Know that the expiation for accidental killing is two consecutive months (sixty days) for each person your father caused to die. It is not permissible for more than one person to share in fasting a single expiation; rather, it is prescribed that one person alone should undertake the single expiation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
