Fatwa No. ( 6805 )
Q: What is the religious opinion regarding barley water packaged in bottles that is sold and which we drink; because it is labeled: (completely free of alcohol) and we trust that the authorities absolutely do not allow the sale of any beverage containing alcohol in these pure lands, but we have heard from some people that they permitted the barley water found in bottles labeled: (alcohol-free barley water) and they found alcohol in it at a rate of 2% to 9%. We are reassured by your definitive opinion in this matter, trusting that you always base your sound opinions on certainty and conviction from knowledge and religion. May Allah guide you to what pleases Him.
A: If the beverage contains a percentage of alcohol such that drinking a large amount of it causes intoxication, then drinking both a large amount and a small amount is forbidden, and selling and buying it is forbidden, and it is obligatory to pour it out; because it is khamr (intoxicants). And if drinking a large amount of it does not cause intoxication, then selling, buying, and drinking it is permissible. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
