The categories of causes that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to be utilized in seeking medical treatment.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : However, these causes, including the medicines that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to be used for treatment, must be clearly understood to be divided into two categories: some are permissible and some are not permissible. Medicines are divided into two categories: some are permissible and some are not permissible. As for the permissible one, it is any medicine that brings about benefit and cure, and about which the Wise Lawgiver has not issued a prohibition; it is permissible to use it. As for the second type of medicine that is not permissible to use, it is the medicine that has been prohibited, for example, khamr (intoxicants) or any intoxicating substance. Some Muslims today have been afflicted with treating certain diseases with medicines containing alcoholic or intoxicating substances. This is not permissible to use for two reasons. First: because it is a foul medicine, and it is authentic that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited foul medicine. The text is as follows:
He prohibited foul medicine. نهى عن الدواء الخبيث
So there is no doubt that if khamr (intoxicants) is mixed into a medicine, it makes it foul, because it is the mother of all fouls. Second: because khamr (intoxicants) specifically was described by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith with his saying:
It is a disease and not a medicine إنها داء وليست بدواء
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 27:88
Therefore, it is not permissible for one who believes in Allah and the Last Day to intentionally seek treatment with khamr (intoxicants) by any method of treatment. So his saying (peace be upon him):
O servants of Allah, seek medical treatment; for Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down a cure for it. يا عباد الله ، تداووا ؛ فإن الله ما أنزل داءً إلا وجعل له شفاءً
means only the permissible medicine about which no prohibition has come in the Wise Shari'ah.
