Q: My mother, about thirty years ago, on one night, began nursing my newborn sister in her first month. Sleep overtook my mother while she was nursing the infant, and she did not wake up until the infant had passed away, as she was suffocated by the breast during nursing. What is required of my mother in this matter? May Allah guide you and assist you.
A: If the situation is as described, it is obligatory for your mother to pay the expiation for accidental killing, which is: freeing a believing slave. If she cannot do so, then fasting two consecutive months, sixty days, because she caused her death. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
