Q: My mother fell seriously ill and passed away as a result of it - may Allah have mercy on her - and before her death, she refused to go to hospitals. When she was struck by her final illness, and after my persistence and that of my brother, we admitted her to King Abdulaziz Hospital in Jeddah , and she underwent surgery, as tests and X-rays confirmed that she had a malignant tumor in her stomach. However, three days after the surgery, the tumor spread to all parts of her body. During that period, she was asking for water, but the doctor refused to give it to her until three days had passed since the surgery. The surgery began to bleed
blood, and my mother would lose consciousness at times and regain it at others. I would recite the testimony of faith to her when I saw that her health condition was unstable. On the night that Allah chose for her, I fell asleep beside her from exhaustion for about an hour. When I woke up, I found that she had departed this life. We praise Allah, who is not praised for anything but what is disliked. One of the women said to me: She saw my mother in a dream, and she was angry with me because I did not give her water when she asked me for it. My question is: Do I bear a sin for what happened, and if so, is an expiation obligatory upon me, and what is it? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: If the situation is as described, then there is no sin upon you for the death of your mother due to not giving her water when she asked for it; because you carried out the doctors' advice not to give her water during the mentioned period. You did not intend to harm her, but rather you were seeking what would be a cause for her healing and the prevention of complications for her. There is no expiation upon you for that. And what one of the women saw in her dream, that your mother was angry with you, should not be heeded, nor should rulings be based on it in this case; because it is from Satan. It is prescribed for you to increase in supplication for your mother for forgiveness and mercy, to give charity on her behalf, and to maintain ties with her relatives and friends, for that is her right upon you after her death.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
