Gold and with him some of the students, and a flood overtook them, and some of them drowned

Fatwa number ( 19995 )
Q: I took four students from the Qur'an memorization school, and while I was driving them in one of the valleys, a flood overtook me and carried the car, with me and the students inside it, for a distance estimated at five hundred yards. After that, I was able to open the car and rescue only one of them, while the others remained inside the car in the middle of the flood, and I was unable to rescue them until they passed away. Their number was three, one of whom was my son. Your Eminence: Am I obligated to fast for the three, including my son? And in the case of that obligation falling on me, am I required to fast six consecutive months without interruption, or two months at a time? Knowing that my age exceeds sixty years. Please inform us, may you be rewarded.
A: If the situation is as you described, there is no sin on you and no expiation for
the death of the three students you were carrying in the car and who drowned in the floodwaters; because you did not neglect their rescue, as you did what you were able to do by rescuing one of the students by carrying him with you, and you did not cause their death; because when you took them on that road, it was free of the flood, and the flood overtook you suddenly in the middle of the road as you mentioned, so there is no blame on you in that, if Allah wills. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
