After that: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Director of the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh and al-Kharj , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (982) and date 26/2/1414 AH. His Excellency asked a question, the text of which is as follows:
We are attaching to Your Eminence a copy of the medical report for the patient (Sh. N. S.), who is currently being treated in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh . Therefore, we request Your Eminence to kindly inform us regarding this matter. The text of the report is as follows: This patient was referred to us by Dr. Qasim from the Oncology Department, as she is suffering from cancer of the nose and pharynx, and she is in her seventh week of pregnancy. In this case, we strongly advise terminating the pregnancy, as chemotherapy will be dangerous to the fetus, and any delay in treating this condition will severely affect the mother. Therefore, we request a prompt response so that we can take the necessary measures to terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible. We are also attaching a copy of a letter from Dr. Qasim , the treating physician in the Oncology Department. Medical examination: Dr. Muhammad al-Awadh, Consultant by delegation in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. al-Na'im, Consultant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Masilh , Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The text of the translation of Dr. Qasim's letter is as follows:
August 9, 1993 CE. To Dr. T. Sabbagh, Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, regarding (Sh. N. S.). Complaint: Cancer of the nose and pharynx with a pregnancy of six weeks. Thank you for examining the aforementioned patient, who was recently found to be suffering from cancer of the nose and pharynx. Medical tests performed on the live sample indicated the presence of crusts of a type of cancer. The woman has been pregnant for six weeks, and she is the mother of nine children, the youngest of whom is two years old. Given that she is pregnant, various radiological examinations cannot be performed on her, and consequently, she cannot be given chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as it is dangerous to the fetus. Therefore, I consider your opinion to be correct, which is terminating the pregnancy on medical grounds . She has an appointment with you this evening. Thank you for your cooperation.
After the Committee studied it, it responded that there is no harm in terminating the pregnancy of the aforementioned (Sh.) if her treatment cannot be carried out except by doing so. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
