Fatwa No. ( 16034 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Islamic Awareness Officer at the Riyadh and al-Kharj Hospital Program, which stated the following: We submit to Your Eminence the medical report concerning the patient (H. A.), who is currently hospitalized at the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh , in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. We ask Allah, then you, for a fatwa. May Allah reward you with good. The text of the translation of the medical report from Dr. Muhammad Azhar is as follows: Complaint: The aforementioned patient was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago, suffering from pulmonary embolism. Her blood circulation is also considered critical. She is taking anticoagulant medications, and her condition has improved as a result. A pelvic ultrasound revealed deep vein thrombosis in the iliac vein. The patient had previously suffered from venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism during her previous pregnancy, where she was
treated with anticoagulant medications after delivery. She is now in her sixth week of pregnancy. If we consider the risks of anticoagulants and the potential for thrombotic embolism, I believe that this pregnancy will pose a serious threat to the patient's health. I request that the patient's condition be reviewed and an opinion be given regarding abortion . Also, the medical report from Dr. \ Sabagh , Dr. \ Kurdy , and Dr. \ al-Juwayser . Its text is as follows: I received the attached letter from Dr. \ Muhammad Azhar , Consultant in Respiratory Therapy, stating that the aforementioned patient is in the first trimester of pregnancy and is suffering from a serious medical problem. Dr. Azhar recommended abortion. I have reviewed this patient's condition, and I strongly support this decision. This patient's life will be in danger if this pregnancy continues. For this reason, I recommend abortion. I request that the necessary legal steps be taken to abort this pregnancy.
After the Committee's study of the two aforementioned reports, it issued a fatwa that it is permissible to abort the pregnancy of the patient (H. A.) based on what was stated in the two aforementioned reports.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
