Fatwa number ( 12780 )
Q: What is the ruling on a man who swore zihar against his wives and said to his wives in one go, in anger that he could not control after a dispute arose among his wives: “You are all of you to me like the back of my mother” ? Is this man’s statement considered a final divorce, or is the obligatory expiation required? And if it is an expiation, does he have to expiate for each wife, as if the wives were multiple, for example two, and fasting was prescribed for him in the absence of freeing a slave at this present time? Does he fast (4) consecutive months, two months for each as her expiation, or are two consecutive months sufficient as an expiation for both of them together? Please, O Shaykh, clarify this lesson for us in detail. May Allah reward you with good.
A: The man who pronounced zihar, as mentioned in the question, is required to perform one expiation for zihar for all his wives; because he pronounced zihar against them with a single statement. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
