Mention of the expiation for zihar.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then Allah the Exalted explained the expiation for the one who commits zihar with his wife, and what is obligatory upon him, and He said:
And those who pronounce thihar from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another
[Al-Mujadila 58:3]
.
This is the first rank. If he says to his wife, "You are to me like the back of my mother," she is not lawful to him unless he frees a slave
the freeing of a slave before they touch one another
[Al-Mujadila 58:3]
.
If he does not find one, Allah the Exalted said:
And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another
[Al-Mujadila 58:4]
.
He must fast two consecutive months before he touches his wife. If he touches her during these two months, he must repeat the two months, because Allah stipulated
two months consecutively before they touch one another
[Al-Mujadila 58:4]
. Even if he has intercourse with her on the last day of the two months or on the last night of the two months, he must repeat the two months, because He stipulated
a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another
[Al-Mujadila 58:4]
.
If he is unable to do so because he is ill and cannot fast the two consecutive months, he must feed sixty poor people.
So how much is the expiation for zihar, then?
The student: Shall I say it?

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: Regarding zihar, there are three types of expiations: freeing a slave; if he is unable to do so, fasting two consecutive months; if he is unable to do so, feeding sixty poor people.

The Shaykh : Very well.
Many people today are lax in this matter. They get angry with their wives and say, "You are like my mother to me," or "You are to me like the back of my mother," or similar words that they regret from the moment they speak them. They go to the door of every scholar they knock on, hoping to find a way out of this situation they have fallen into.
