Fatwa No. ( 12012 )
Q: I have sisters who are studying. In one of the years, I declared it forbidden for them to study, but in the following year, they did study. I am informing you that I uttered the word “forbidden” to them by saying: “It is forbidden for you to study anymore.” Therefore, I ask you to kindly answer my question: Is there a sin on me? Please inform me.
A: If your intention in saying: “It is forbidden for you to study anymore” was to divorce your wife, then one divorce has taken place. You may take her back during the waiting period, or after the waiting period with a new contract, provided that two divorces did not precede this. If your intention in that statement was to prevent your sisters from studying, then its ruling is the ruling of an oath, and you must pay the expiation. The expiation is: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa’ (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, dates, or similar staple food of the country, or clothing them. If you cannot find any of that, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
