Q: I inform your eminence that while I was reversing my car, I collided with another car from behind. That other car veered off and struck two people, one of whom died. The Jeddah traffic department has determined that I was the cause of this accident, and consequently the death, and has ruled that I must pay 75% of the blood money for the deceased. I therefore ask your eminence to issue a fatwa: Is it obligatory for me to fast for two consecutive months?
A: If the matter is as stated, the expiation is obligatory upon you. It is the freeing of a believing slave. If you cannot find one, you must fast for two consecutive months. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
