Q: I was driving an agricultural machine at night on a high-speed international road, towing another machine behind it. The rear machine had no rear lights or reflectors, so I was forced to take the opposite lane to drive using the front lights. While I was in that state, a car came in the direction I was traveling, and the distance between us kept shrinking until I was forced
to leave the road, but the rear machine was still on the road, so the car collided with it. The accident resulted in the death of two of its passengers . I was sentenced in absentia to one year in prison under the country's secular law, but I want the Islamic ruling on this. Do I owe an expiation, the freeing of a slave, or blood money to their families, or do I owe nothing? Please inform us of what is required of us from the rights of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and the rights of the deceased. May Allah reward you with good, prolong your lives, and increase you in knowledge.
A: If the situation is as described, you owe blood money for every soul whose death you caused, and you owe an expiation, which is freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do that, you must fast two consecutive months for every soul; because you were negligent in driving in the opposite lane, and the rear machine that the agricultural machine you were driving was towing had no rear lights. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
