Q: Is it permissible for me to greet my brother’s wife? We were raised together in the same house, and we are currently living in the same house. Is it also permissible for me to stay up late with her or talk to her? Please inform us; may Allah reward you and may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not permissible for you to shake hands with your brother’s wife, nor to stay up late with her. However, it is permissible for you to greet her with words without being in seclusion, and to talk to her regarding a need you have, provided you are safe from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and there is no seclusion. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
