Fatwa number ( 20967 )
Q: I am a young man who proposed to one of the committed girls, and on the day of the contract, I faced a difficult situation with my family; this was immediately after the contract. They had me enter the family gathering in the house and surprised me by asking: Where were you? Where were you? They claimed that I was around one of my wife's legal sisters, alleging that she is not beautiful and that she is not suitable for me. As the days passed, my mind began to whisper to me and command me to do things that worried me day and night, until I reached a very difficult psychological state. My thoughts went to things I am not pleased with, and I cannot abandon my wife no matter what happens. Sometimes fear and anxiety come to me that I have fallen into something that angers my Lord and angers me, so that when I remember something my mind used to whisper to me, fear and anxiety come to me, until it reached
The illness reached the point where, if I spoke to anyone, I would feel like I was another person from within me, and the conversation would be cut off and remind me of it. The state even reached the point where I would go to the mirror and look at it: Did my tongue speak through what I was saying to any other person? After all this, I presented myself to a psychiatrist, and he told me: All of this was against my will and outside my control, and I have been healed, praise be to Allah. But O Shaykh, is my marriage valid despite these circumstances? I hold you accountable for this fatwa on the Day of Resurrection before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and I ask our Shaykh to pray for me with everything you love for yourself, and to answer clearly about my condition.
A: If you were sane and of sound mind at the time of the marriage contract, then the contract is valid, and the psychological symptoms that afflicted you after that do not affect it, and the contract does not need to be renewed. Praise be to Allah who healed you from what afflicted you. We advise you to fear Allah the Exalted, to remember Him frequently, especially the dhikr of the morning, evening, and sleep, to read the Noble Qur'an, to maintain the obligatory prayers in congregation in the mosque, and to keep the company of the righteous. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
