Fatwa number ( 7566 )
Q: A man married a woman and then divorced her, and he did not have any children from her. Then he married a second woman and had sons and daughters from her. A son of his was breastfed by this second wife for two months after the death of his mother. Then this man married a third woman and had sons and daughters from her. Then he married a fourth woman and had two sons from her. What is the ruling on the following: 1 - Are the four wives of this man mahrams (relatives one may not marry) to this infant who was breastfed by this man’s second wife, such that they are like his mother through breastfeeding, or is it only the one who breastfed him who is his mother? 2 - Is the wife of this infant a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to this man who breastfed the infant from his milk, like a child born from the loins, in that she is forbidden to him, or not? 3 - Is everyone who was breastfed by the milk of this man’s wives, whether sons or daughters, a sibling to this infant? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: First: If the situation is as described regarding the breastfeeding, and it occurred within the two-year period, then this child becomes a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to the wives of this man who provided the milk; because their husband is his father through breastfeeding, he is like his father through lineage. And Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:22] ,
And it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam) . Second: The wife of this child becomes a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to this man who provided the milk; because she is, through breastfeeding, the wife of his son from his milk, just as the wife of his son from lineage is. And Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nisa 4:23] , and due to the aforementioned hadith. Third: Everyone who was breastfed by the milk of this man with the breastfeeding that establishes prohibition, through any of his wives, is a brother to this child through breastfeeding. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

وَلاَ تَنْكِحُوا مَا نَكَحَ آبَاؤُكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ إِلا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَAnd it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.
