Determining an amount to be paid to the guardian in exchange for the celebration
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18834 )
Q: Our tribe has agreed that the groom shall pay the girl’s guardian (6000) six thousand riyals on the wedding night in lieu of the costs of the celebration, and this amount is collected from every married member of the tribe, whether in straitened or comfortable circumstances, equally. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you, and may you not be burdened. Note: They hold the wedding feast in the guardian’s house.
A: This agreement compels people to do what Allah the Exalted has not made obligatory upon them. It may cause dispute, discord, hatred, and enmity among the members of the tribe. It may also take money from its owner without his willing consent. Furthermore, it equates those in straitened circumstances with those in comfortable circumstances regarding the money they pay, which is not just in any way. Based on the foregoing, this agreement is not permissible to conclude, nor is it permissible to continue with it.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
