It is permissible to stipulate a sum of money as a deferred portion

Fatwa number ( 11955 )
Q: It has been observed among the tribes, in terms of bridal gifts, that upon marriage, the husband's family is asked to pay a sum of money, which is called a recent addition and remains a debt on the husband, on the pretext that if any disagreement arises with the husband or the wife is divorced, the husband is forced and demanded to pay it. This is different from the mahr. Does the Shari'ah permit this, or is it not permissible? What is the ruling on this, even if he did not pay a mahr? And if he did pay a mahr, we hope you will graciously issue a fatwa for us on this matter.
May Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: There is no harm in that; because it is known and is part of the mahr, but they agreed to defer it for a benefit that necessitated that, such as it may serve as a deterrent against divorce. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
