The woman's photograph in the passport
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 2595 )
Q: Is the photograph of a woman's face in the passport and elsewhere an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) or not, and is it permissible for a woman who refuses to provide a photograph to submit a certificate in her place, and is the reason for the refusal the prohibition or not, and what is the limit of a woman's clothing in the Book and the Prophetic Sunnah?
A: She is not permitted to allow her face to be photographed, neither in the passport nor elsewhere; because it is an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered), and because the presence of her photograph in the passport and elsewhere is a cause of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) regarding her. The woman is entirely an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) according to the apparent evidence of the Book and the Sunnah, so it is obligatory
for her to cover her entire body from those who are not her mahram (a relative one may not marry); due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nur 24:31] , and His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Ahzab 33:53] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
