Ruling on the circumcision of a new Muslim

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 9023 )
Q: If a Christian man wishes to enter Islam, what are the matters that follow from that, such as the fact that he and his wife are married according to their previous religion, and that they have a number of children? Is circumcision obligatory for him, given that he has passed the age of thirty-five? And what are the matters that must be taught to him first?
A: First: It is obligatory to teach him the two testimonies, make him understand their meaning, and explain to him that 'Isa is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. The six pillars of faith and the remaining five pillars of Islam should be explained to him, each in its proper time, as established in the hadith of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the question of Jibril to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the sending of Mu'adh to Yemen . Second: If he and his wife embrace Islam, they remain a couple based on their previous marriage contract. Likewise, if she embraces Islam after him, or he embraces Islam after her, they are confirmed in their marriage.
based on the previous contract between them. And if he embraces Islam and she does not, they are confirmed in their marriage if she is a Jewish or Christian woman who has previously been married; for Allah the Exalted said:
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before youالْيَوْمَ أُحِلَّ لَكُمُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ وَطَعَامُ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ حِلٌّ لَكُمْ وَطَعَامُكُمْ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:5]
the verse. Third: Any of their children who has not reached puberty is ruled to be a Muslim, and any who has reached puberty is invited to Islam, hoping that he may respond. Fourth: Circumcision is among the sunnahs of fitrah that Allah prescribed for Muslims, so it is prescribed for him, unless he fears harm to himself, in which case it is left. It is better not to speak to him about it until his standing in Islam is established. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
